how to make an americano-1

Americano is a very popular coffee that originates in American so. It is born in espresso, and due to the addition of water, it gets diluted but still keeps the bold flavor of espresso. For people who just run out of milk for a latte or simply want to make a cup of coffee quickly at home, americano is a great choice.

So, what do you need to make an americano? Espresso beans, hot water, a coffee grinder, a coffee scale, and a tamper. In addition, you also need a pre-heated coffee mug to prevent coffee from getting cold too soon.

  • Select proper espresso beans you like. Because adding water to espresso actually means amplifying the drawbacks of beans, you need to make sure the espresso beans are of high quality.
  • Measure the coffee beans with your scale for a single, double or triple shot of espresso. If you are not sure, we recommend 14-18 grams, which is usually for a double espresso.
  • Grind the coffee beans very finely until they turn to powder.
  • Place the coffee grounds in the portafilter of the coffee machine. Tamp the surface evenly and tightly.
  • Make espresso with your machine, and then use the pre-heated coffee mug to catch it.

  • Heat up the water. Here are two adjustable factors according to your preferences. The first one is the water temperature. Too high temperature will make it hard for the coffee to cool down, which can affect the taste. Too cold can also have a side effect on the quality. Overall, the best temperature ranges from 70 to 76 Celsius
  • Slowly add the espresso to the hot water. Don’t do the opposite as that will scald the espresso and damage the crema in it.
  • Add ingredients if you like: Americano normally asks for water and espresso, but you can still add other ingredients, such as cinnamon, milk and sugar, vanilla, and more.

How to make an iced americano

An iced americano is also very easy to make. You just need water, ice cubes, espresso, and another coffee mug. Fill the mug with some ice cubes, and then add in the espresso according to the procedures above. Finally, fill the rest of the coffee mug with cold water.

Using espresso, americano has a fuller and richer taste than regular drip coffee, though the caffeine it typically contains is only half of that in regular coffee.
