Should you wash your washing machine
A washing machine is a wonderful appliance that can clean your dirty clothes and other items. However, it needs washing as well. Dark, warm and moist, your washing machine is the perfect breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Now it’s time to wash your washing machine thoroughly.
Why should you clean the washing machine?
The buildup of germs and bacteria is the main reason for cross-contamination. For instance, the survived germs may be spread to the other clothing and cause allergies, irritation, or rashes. Also, this residue can sometimes make your dirty clothes smell even worse. As for the longevity of the washing machine, regular cleaning will make it work well for years.
Leave the washer door open
Each time you’ve used the washing machine, you should leave the door open for a while to let the moisture dry completely. After all, moistness is one of the best ingredients that mold and bacteria feed on. The same is true for washed clothes. Remove them out of the machine as soon as you finish washing.
Clean the detergent drawer and door seals
Both the detergent drawer and door seals are easily overlooked corners. Take the detergent drawer out and fully rinse it under running water. While for the washer door seals, you need to use a wet cloth and soapy water to wash the folds that bacteria may build up.
Clear the drain filter
The drain filter is usually on the front bottom of your washing machine. Find it and then use a bowl to collect the wastewater in it.
Sterilize the washing machine
Some washing machines come with a cleaning cycle function. You can use it to fully clean the machine based on the frequency you use it.
If you don’t have the function, DIY on your own. Pour in half a cup of baking soda and three cups of vinegar. Add in hot water and then turn on the machine. The baking soda and vinegar can be replaced by the washing machine cleaner, which is specially designed for deep cleaning. To have a better effect, you can also leave the solution for a couple of hours midway.
Whatever the method, the secret to keeping your washing machine fresh and clean all the time is to make cleaning your habit. Do it as a daily routine, and you’ll no longer find your washed clothes with unwanted smells.
